World Cup 2026 Tips — Monday 22 June (AEST), The Punter’s Verdict
Here’s the thing about Monday’s slate from an Aussie chair: the headline act, Argentina v Austria, kicks off at 3:00am AEST on Tuesday morning. That’s a proper 4:45am-alarm-or-don’t-bother call, and I’ll tell you up front whether I think it’s worth the sleep debt. The good news is the matches that follow drift into civilised territory — there’s a 7:00am, a 10:00am and an early-arvo game on Tuesday — so you can stack a sensible watch-and-punt morning if you play the AEST clock right.

Quick ground rules before the picks. All odds below are decimal, taken from a consensus of bookmaker prices as of 22 June ~10:00 ET — indicative, not gospel, because mid-tournament lines move fast. Treat them as a guide to shape, shop around your own book for the actual price, and remember implied probability is just 100 ÷ the decimal odds.
Argentina v Austria — 3:00am AEST (Tue) — the alarm-clock game
Argentina at 1.58 (≈63% implied), the draw 3.65, Austria the rank outsiders at 5.38. The defending champions are unbeaten on an eight-match winning run, Messi tied Klose’s all-time World Cup goals record with a hat-trick against Algeria, and a win here all but books their R32 spot. Austria, for their part, beat Jordan 3–1 and are no pushover — captain David Alaba was talking them up pre-match.
My read: 1.58 on Argentina is a fair price, not a value price. The juice is gone the moment you account for how comfortably they’ve moved through the tournament. If you’re setting the alarm, the more interesting angles are the goals and the Messi props (covered in full in the dedicated Argentina v Austria preview). For a straight result, I’d rather watch than wager at that price.
France v Iraq — 7:00am AEST (Tue) — breakfast banker, no value
France are 1.08. Let that sink in: a 1.08 line implies a 92.6% chance, and Opta’s model agrees almost to the decimal (France 88.5%, draw 8.5%, Iraq 3%). Mbappé is already France’s all-time top scorer after his brace against Senegal. Iraq are at their first World Cup since 1986 and arrived on the back of a 4–1 loss to Norway.
There’s no standalone value in a 1.08 favourite. If France belong anywhere on your slip, it’s as a banker leg in a multi — and even then, you’re leaning hard on a result the market has already nailed. Pass as a single.
Norway v Senegal — 10:00am AEST (Tue) — the one I’d actually have a punt on
Now we’re talking. Norway 2.04, draw 3.41, Senegal 3.22 — the most evenly-priced game on the card, and the one with knockout implications for both. Norway have won 11 straight competitive matches and Erling Haaland has scored in 11 consecutive games for them; Opta still only makes Norway 45.0% to Senegal’s 29.6%, with the draw a chunky 25.4%.

Here’s my verdict, and it’s the standout call of the day: Haaland anytime goalscorer is the play. A man who has scored in 11 straight for his country, against a Senegal side that shipped three to France, at a price that should sit in value territory — that’s a far better-shaped bet than guessing the 90-minute result in a game the model rates close to a coin-flip-with-a-draw. If you want a result, the 3.41 on the draw isn’t mad given how tight the model reads it.
Jordan v Algeria — 1:00pm AEST (Tue) — late-arvo flier
Algeria 1.47, draw 3.98, Jordan 6.24. Riyad Mahrez is back in the XI after being rested against Argentina, and Algeria will be desperate after losing 0–3 to the holders. Jordan, meanwhile, scored their first-ever World Cup goal through Olwan but lost 1–3 to Austria.
Algeria are the right favourites and 1.47 is about fair. The angle I’d look at is Algeria -1 on the handicap or an Algeria/Over combination — a wounded, talent-heavy side against a World Cup debutant tends to mean a multi-goal margin. For a flutter on the way home from the shops (AEST early arvo), there are worse ways to spend it.
The Punter’s Verdict — where Monday’s value actually sits
Strip it back and the favourites (France 1.08, Argentina 1.58, Algeria 1.47) are all priced about right with no value left on the win line. The money’s smarter in the props and the one tight game:
- Best single of the day: Haaland anytime goalscorer in Norway v Senegal — form and price align.
- France at 1.08 is a multi leg, not a standalone bet — implied 92.6%, no value.
- Argentina at 1.58 is fair, not value; the Messi-record props are the more interesting Argentina angle.
- Norway v Senegal (10:00am AEST) is the most watchable, most competitive fixture — and the only true coin-flip-with-a-draw.
- Play the AEST clock: one 3am alarm call, then 7am, 10am and 1pm games you can watch awake.
