World Cup 2026 Round of 16 — All Eight Ties, AEST Kick-Offs, And The Ones That Matter For Your Wallet
The bracket’s locked. After today’s (3 Jul) three R32 results, all eight R16 pairings are confirmed for the 4–7 July slate. From a Sydney chair, that’s four nights in a row with knockout football starting between 2:00am and 10:00am AEST — the most concentrated betting window of the tournament. Here’s the full picture, AEST-converted, with the verified decimal odds, the ones I’d watch, the ones I’d skip, and the heat / altitude storylines that matter more than usual this round.

The storylines the markets are watching
1. Philadelphia’s Extreme Heat Warning — the live player-welfare story
M90 is the clearest heat-risk tie on the slate. NWS has Philadelphia under an Extreme Heat Warning through 8pm EDT on 4 July (squarely over the 5pm ET kick-off): high around 38°C, feels-like temperature up to ~41°C, 30% chance of storms after 2pm. Lincoln Financial Field is open-air. NPR’s analysis found the 4 July Philadelphia match was "particularly likely to take place in dangerous conditions" — more than a third of the tournament’s matches were at high heat/humidity risk. Fifpro has publicly said conditions like these should trigger match delay or postponement.
For the punter, the read is straightforward: expect cooling breaks, expect pace to drop after the hour mark, expect fewer late goals. The cleanest play on the game may well be Under 2.5 goals rather than France -1.5 — the heat will compress the shape of the second half.
2. Mexico v England — the altitude can’t be adapted to
England manager Thomas Tuchel told Sky Sports on 2 July: "My understanding is we cannot adapt to the altitude. We have three days in between the [Congo and Mexico] matches and we cannot adapt to it." Estadio Azteca sits at around 2,240 metres (7,350 ft). Mexico haven’t lost a World Cup match there. This is a tempo and lungs game. Tuchel says England banked heat training into their preparation — but the altitude is a different physiological load. Mexico are 3.25, England 2.47, draw 3.25 — a coin-flip with a draw tilt.
3. Spain v Portugal — the glamour tie that doesn’t price as glamour
Both teams have played their way into the bracket without conceding. Spain are yet to concede at the tournament; Portugal beat Croatia 2-1 in regulation, with Ronaldo’s record-setting penalty and Ramos’s 90+4′ winner. Spain at 1.95 vs Portugal at 4.20 — that’s tighter than I’d expect for two of the tournament’s cleanest defensive sides. The draw at 3.70 is generous given the shape of both teams.
4. USA v Belgium — the genuine coin-flip
M94 at Lumen Field, Seattle, 8pm ET Monday. USA 2.72, Belgium 2.77 — that’s near-as-dammit a coin flip. With Folarin Balogun suspended (red card vs Bosnia in the group stage), the USA lose their starting striker. That’s a genuine softening of the attack and it tilts the price slightly toward Belgium without making Belgium favourites.
5. The Socceroos question — Australia likely into M95
If Australia beats Egypt on Saturday morning AEST, they face the Argentina v Cape Verde winner at Mercedes-Benz Stadium, Atlanta, on Tuesday 7 July at 4pm ET — that’s Wednesday 9 July, 2:00am AEST. That’s a brutal AEST kick-off but the kind of occasion the Socceroos’ supporters have waited years for.
The Punter’s Verdict — where the value sits
Three places to have a real look:
- M90 France to win, but at smaller margin than the book expects — the heat in Philadelphia compresses France’s normal dominance. Under 2.5 goals at around 1.80-1.90 is the better-shaped play than France -1.5 at a short 1.40-ish price.
- M92 Mexico draw no bet — the altitude tilts everything toward Mexico. The 3.25 win price is fair; the draw no bet around 2.20 reads as a value play given England coach Tuchel has openly admitted the team can’t adapt.
- M93 Spain-Draw double chance at around 1.30 — both teams defensive-minded, both yet to concede at the tournament.
One I’d avoid: M94 USA outright at 2.72. With Balogun out, the USA attack is weakened without a market correction.

- Eight R16 ties confirmed; M95 / M96 fill in after today’s R32 results.
- Decimal odds from the 3 Jul consensus aggregator comparison board.
- Philadelphia heat warning (~38°C / feels ~41°C) is the live player-welfare story — play Under 2.5 on M90.
- Mexico altitude factor (Tuchel quote) — Mexico draw no bet reads value on M92.
- Spain v Portugal is the glamour tie of the round but doesn’t price as one — both yet to concede.
- AEST plan: 4am, 7am, 6am, 10am over four nights — set a calendar reminder for each.
