If you parked an outright ticket before the tournament and haven’t looked since, here’s your nudge: the title market has shifted under your feet over the last 24 hours. France have moved to the head of the queue, Argentina have been hammered in after Messi’s heroics, England have shortened off a wild win, and the USA — the home hosts — have been clipped into a price worth a second glance. For Aussie punters who like the long-range markets, this is the moment the picture starts to firm up.

Let me lay out the current board, then the 24-hour moves that caused it, and finish with where I think the value actually lives for someone reading from down under.

The current outright board

Decimal title odds as of 21 June (figures published in American odds by FOX Sports’ FanDuel board and converted to decimal; cross-checked against OddsPedia where available — and note OddsPedia had Spain a touch longer at 7.00):

Selection Odds (decimal) Implied probability
France 4.70 21.3%
Spain 6.50 15.4%
England 7.00 14.3%
Argentina 9.00 11.1%
Portugal 11.00 9.1%
Brazil 13.00 7.7%
Germany 13.00 7.7%
Netherlands 16.00 6.3%
Norway 31.00 3.2%
United States 34.00 3.2%

Implied probability is just 100 ÷ the decimal price — handy for spotting when a name is shorter than your own read of their chances. Add those percentages up across the field and you’ll clear 100% comfortably; that overround is the bookmaker’s margin, and it’s why "fair price" beats "favourite" every time.

The 24-hour movers — what actually changed

France Overtook Spain at the top — now 4.70
Argentina ≈11.00 → 9.00 (Messi hat-trick v Algeria)
England ≈8.00 → 6.50 (4–2 win over Croatia)
United States Shortened into 34.00 (after 2–0 v Australia)

The movement log (as of 21 June) tells the story:

  • Argentina shortened from roughly 11.00 to 9.00 after Messi’s hat-trick against Algeria — the defending champs are unbeaten and the market noticed.
  • England were clipped from about 8.00 to 6.50 after a 4–2 win over Croatia, though that result also showed a defence that ships goals.
  • USA were shortened to around 34.00 — the book’s low for them since December, with prediction-market money following the 2–0 win over the Socceroos.
  • Ecuador and Uruguay drifted out (Ecuador 120-1 to 200-1; Uruguay out to 100-1) — the market quietly writing off a couple of outsiders.

The Punter’s Verdict — where the value sits

Three reads from down under.

First, France at 4.70 is a short favourite in a wide-open 48-team field. A 21.3% implied chance for any one team to win a tournament this big is a confident price. I’m not rushing in at that number — the value in a favourite this early tends to be thin.

Second, England at 6.50–7.00 is the one I’d swerve. Yes, they shortened off the Croatia win, but they conceded twice doing it, and they’re carrying knocks to Saka, Rice and Rashford per the injury board. Shortening a side whose defence just leaked into a four-goal game is exactly the kind of reactive move sharp punters fade.

Example: A $50 outright on France at 4.70 returns $235 (a $185 profit) if they lift the trophy. Implied probability 100 ÷ 4.70 = 21.3% — so you’re effectively being asked whether France are better than a one-in-five shot to win the whole thing.

Third — and this is the Aussie angle — the USA at 34.00 is the host-nation dark-horse play, with eyes open. History says hosts overperform (the USA and Norway sit together on the dark-horse list at these prices), and they’ve already qualified with two wins. But they’re the side that just knocked our mob about 2–0, so back them through gritted teeth if at all. At 34.00 it’s a small-stakes "wouldn’t it be something" ticket, not a core position.

For mine, the smarter long-range money this tournament has been in the each-way and "to reach the final" markets rather than the outright win line — the field is simply too deep for short favourites to offer value. If you’re building a portfolio, spread it and keep the outright stake modest.

  • France (4.70) have overtaken Spain (6.50) at the top of the title market after Matchday 2.
  • Argentina shortened to 9.00 (Messi hat-trick); England into 6.50–7.00 off a leaky 4–2 win.
  • The USA were clipped to 34.00 after beating Australia — the host dark-horse price.
  • France at 4.70 is a confident favourite price with thin value; England is the one to fade.
  • In a 48-team field, modest outright stakes and each-way thinking beat chasing short favourites.

Who is favourite to win the World Cup 2026?
As of 21 June, France lead the outright market at 4.70 (implied 21.3%), having overtaken Spain (6.50). England (7.00) and Argentina (9.00) follow.
Why did Argentina’s title odds shorten?
Argentina were cut from roughly 11.00 to 9.00 after Lionel Messi’s hat-trick against Algeria — they remain unbeaten and the market reacted to his form and the win.
Are the USA worth backing at 34.00?
As host nation they carry the historical overperformance angle and have already qualified, making 34.00 a legitimate small-stakes dark-horse play — but it’s a flier, not a core bet.
